The government is now negotiating with the Chad government in an effort to get custody of GSPC leaders held prisoner by Chad rebel group MDJT in northern Chad. Negotiations with MDJT have failed partly because of opposition from the Chad government. It is feared that some wealthy al Qaeda backer could come up with enough money to ransom the GSPC leaders, but so far this has not happened. So Algeria is trying to work out a ransom deal with both MDJT and the Chad government. While the GSPC has appointed new leaders back in Algeria, the new crew are not as capable as the ones held prisoner by the Chad rebels.
